JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – For an interior designer, creating a memorable and distinctive model home for the senior housing market that stands above its competitors presents many challenges. Sisler Johnston Interior Design, however, accomplished that feat on behalf of Fleet Landing. The company has been honored with a silver award from the 2005 National Association of Home Builders Best of Seniors Housing Design Awards.
Fourteen judges from all over the United States judged 360 entries from as far away as Malag, Spain. The winners were announced at a reception with over 400 in attendance.
“We are honored to receive this national award,” said Judith Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design and ASID Allied Member. “Designing for senior citizens is something that is near and dear to my heart. Because of my “hands on” experience living with aging parents, I am sensitive to the needs of the senior housing market and appreciate their desire to enjoy living in surroundings that are beautiful as well as functional.”
The senior housing market is the fastest growing segment of the homebuilding industry. The 51 billion dollar industry represents 20 percent of all homes built in America.
Sisler Johnston designed a two-bedroom apartment home model at Fleet Landing, an upscale life care community in Atlantic Beach. The warm and inviting design features a relaxed coastal motif with a complimentary color pallet of camel, sage, cinnamon and spice. The walls are painted in a neutral classic camel. White dove trim paint on all crown and base mouldings provides a striking contrast. A Persian carpet helps define the living space and Sisler Johnston selected furnishings and coordinating fabrics that reinforce the coastal décor.

Sisler Johnston included upgraded options in the model, such as hardwood plank flooring in the living areas and faux stone tile in the bathrooms. She selected crisp white raised panel cabinets with antique pewter hardware and faux granite patterned countertops in the kitchen to compliment the modern appliance options. Sisler Johnston added decorative lighting and fans throughout as well as custom window treatments, designed to surround the windows as well as draw attention to their expansive size and opportunity for natural light.
Each year a panel of architects, designers and builders honors the nation’s best senior housing designs on how effectively the projects respond to the demands and need of the 50-plus housing market. The jurors commented on how Sisler Johnston’s nautical theme truly reflected the market area. They believe the clean design and architecturally detailed window treatments expanded the space. They complimented Sisler Johnston on choosing furnishings that effectively defined the function of each space.
