JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA - The use of color in designing interiors can help create an appealing environment. Color is a powerful force that establishes mood and personality. Color can also influence emotions, and different colors affect people in different ways. Color goes beyond the artistic. Research shows the use of color has psychological aspects.
"I have always been interested in the way people relate to color and the reasons behind it," said Judith Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design and ASID Allied Member. "My master's degree is in psychology and I originally studied this
phenomenon in graduate school. Consider what happens when you walk into a model home, color often plays a role in the emotions we experience as well as the conclusion we draw about preferring one home over another."
Sisler Johnston recently attended workshops on color trends and research at the International Home Furnishings Market. Experts in the field of psychology and color marketing conduct research studies on color associations to learn how different colors affect people as well as the best ways to use color.

Red is the strongest of all colors and expresses excitement and vitality. Red, as well as orange and yellow, are warm colors. Orange expresses good cheer and joy, while yellow encourages spontaneity and inspires creativity. Green, blue and violet are cool colors. Green is refreshing and enhances concentration, while blue promotes thoughtfulness and relaxation. Violet encourages purpose and intuitive understanding.
Keep in mind each of these colors has many different shades and tints, each with its own distinctive personality. In addition, color associations can be highly personal and may be based on individual experiences or emotions towards a particular color, including childhood memories. Outgoing people may gravitate to bright, lively colors, while conservative individuals may favor subdued, traditional colors. Color preferences can also vary from region to region. The south, for example, is known for its bright and colorful warmth.
