Judith Sisler Johnston, president, Sisler Johnston Interior Design and ASID Allied Member, offers her top design recommendations for the New Year. These suggestions can help make surroundings more pleasing and in tune with individual style.
1. Define personal style. Think about how the space should feel and look. Create an environment that feels good. The best way to create a wonderful interior is to fill it with the things that bring enjoyment.
2. Add color. Color is an easy way to add personality as well as update the look of the space. The New Year’s hottest choices are robust colors. “Don’t be afraid to think outside of the white envelope when it comes to selecting a wall color,” Sisler Johnston said. “Caramel, khaki and soft latte tones can add depth and interest to ordinary walls, especially if your wall color is coordinated with floor coverings.”
3. Buy quality. Build interiors over the years with well-chosen pieces that hold up over time. Rather than make hasty or unplanned purchases, save up for those desired quality pieces rather than settling for something else.
4. Organize and reduce clutter. If you don’t use it, need it or love it, get rid of it. Clean out and rearrange your space to make room for what is truly needed and wanted. Organization looks good, works well and makes life easier. It will revitalize and refresh the space, making it look larger and more welcoming.
5. Create one space with a spa-like environment. In today’s busy and demanding world, it is important to have a haven that provides peace of mind from the stresses of the day. Relaxation brings renewal and the ability to give more to others.
6. Finish one room completely before you start another. It is best to prioritize and complete one area of the home before moving on to the next. Hiring a professional with excellent resources can save time and money in the long run.
“This will give you the greatest satisfaction and be money well spent,” Sisler Johnston said. “Don’t ‘water down’ your budget by trying to spread it over too many areas of the home.”
