SISLER JOHNSTON INTERIOR DESIGN USES
RESOURCES TO STAY AHEAD OF 2008
INTERIOR DESIGN COLOR TRENDS

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Color is an essential element of home design and every year the newest trends dictate emerging color palettes.  Interior design professionals believe anticipating color trends to be a critical key to a design project’s success.

“I am continually researching the latest color trends to incorporate into our residential and commercial design projects,” said Judith Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design and ASID Allied Member.  “By encouraging clients to use new color palettes, their designs stay current and fashionable.”

Color trends are never static and always changing.  That’s why Sisler Johnston uses the resources available at Sherwin-Williams website to stay ahead of color trends.  The company also publishes a magazine quarterly about color news and design trends that is targeted to interior designers and architects.  Sherwin-Williams’ 2008 color palette is travel-inspired and features four destination color themes motivated by fashion, technology, geography and culture.

One of the new collections, Expand Your Horizons, has been influenced by colors used by the automobile industry on hybrid cars, sport cars and SUVs.  Deep iron ore, a charcoal, is the basic black in this collection.  Other hues include fiery cayenne or a soft neutral shade Sherwin-Williams calls Tatami Tan.  Aquarium is another offering and works well with beach, tropical or contemporary designs.

The Around the World collection draws its inspiration from global cultures and traditions.  Plum brown anchors the palette and pairs with tupelo green, ceremonial gold and borscht.  Other hues have been shaped by fashion, décor and architecture from around the world.  The colors are earthy and opulent, such as Russian-influenced relic bronze.

The classics have been updated in a contemporary collection Sherwin-Williams calls No Place Like Home.  Environmental, political and economic instability provides the motivating force for these harmonious colors, which are viewed as safe, stable and practical.  This collection includes a return to grounded white and cool neutral grey.  The green design movement prompted the new agate green.  Classic sand pairs with granite and bateau brown for a pleasing balance. On the softer side, colors such as restful white, mountain air and twinkle offer stronger tints of grounded tones.

Sherwin-Williams’ boldest palette is called Fork in the Road and includes the fun and festive bright complementary hues, reminiscent of tropical settings.  Vivid colors include fountain, gladiola, organic green and quilt gold.  The range in this grouping is sophisticated, vibrant and varied.  While some of the colors are familiar, other shades are more energetic and adventurous.

The Fork in the Road collection includes earth and jewel tones like majestic purple, real red and gecko green.  Other shades are desert sun, scrub brush and bleached-out stone as well as wood-inspired colors such as cocoon, ash violet and evening shadow.  Morocco and Moorish architecture prompted colors like liberty blue, granite peak and frank blue.

To add sheen to any of the new colors, metallic coatings can be applied over paint with a brush or roll.  These coatings do not require any different techniques or preparations than other paints.  More elaborate faux finish techniques such as ragging or combing can also produce glittery results.

Before beginning any type of design work, Sisler Johnston recommends consulting with an interior design professional about color selections to ensure the most satisfying results.

“One of the techniques I use to decide on colors is to place choices on a piece of smooth white card stock so that they can be viewed without the influence of their surroundings,” Sisler Johnston said.  “My favorite shades in this new collection include agate green, cayenne and aquarium. I gravitate toward the bright energetic colors, but enjoy grounding them with Tatami tan, iron ore and classic sand tones to produce pleasing combinations.”
