JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Interior design insiders
understand the importance of staying ahead of the curve,
particularly when it comes to forecasts about color trends.
“Consumers
yearn for the latest offerings, whether it is the most up-to-date
technology or color for their décor,” said Judith
Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design
and ASID Allied Member. “It is vital to be aware
of emerging market trends so that I can best serve my clients. Understanding
trends makes it possible to recommend the colors and items
that will be most popular now and in the future.”
Sisler Johnston is not alone. Colorists around the
world are some of the most sought-after industry experts. The
Color Association is the oldest color forecasting service
in the United States and has been issuing color reports since
1915. Manufacturers, such as paint companies Benjamin
Moore and Sherwin-Williams, also have forecasters who report
on the industry’s changing color trends.
Trend forecasters unanimously agree that eco-awareness and
consumer interest in the environment and green products continues
to be the biggest influencer of 2009 color palettes. Environmental
issues are an industry focus and living green is evolving
into a lifestyle. Although varying shades of green
remain popular, environmental colors extend to the colors
of the earth. The latest color palettes feature green
with shades of blue as well as brown hues. The colors
range from ocean blue, garden green and dark khaki with shimmering
gray and off-white adding a new dimension to the palette.

In keeping with the environment, recycling what could be
trash into treasure is also influencing home design and décor
colors. Honest, authentic colors pay tribute to minimalism
and living pared down to the simplest means. This soft
palette celebrates eco-friendly colors in shades of white,
gray and sand tones that work in harmony with natural materials,
such as fibers, wood and stone.
Pantone Color Institute
forecasters say this palette revisits shabby chic with a
greater emphasis on chic, describing it as “designer
boutique meets flea market finds.”
With a focus on environmentalism, 2009 colors will highlight
cool, soothing shades of blue, green and purple. Yet,
forecasters predict warm red and orange tones will also provide
a vibrant pop of color to keep the look new and fresh. Pantone’s
Solar Energy palette captures the dynamic power of the sun
with colorful variations of mandarin and flame orange, radiating
gold and green-based yellows. Wine and fuchsia add
an interesting dimension to the mix. These bright warm
colors illuminate depth and brilliance. In the metal
category, bronze will remain the most popular metallic choice
and appear more refined than in the past.

While local environmental issues are cultivating the strongest
color trends, another significant influence can be linked
to the bright, rich and exotic colors that define different
cultures around the world. Travel to real or imaginary
destinations also serves as inspiration for this sophisticated
color palette. For years, bold red, spice tones and
jewel colors have been associated with China, India and the
Middle East. With a kaleidoscope of colors available
in the global marketplace, expect the unexpected. The
Color Marketing Group is predicting the popularity of unique
color combinations, such as bright organic shades teamed
with pale hues.
