JACKSONVILLE, Florida - The work of Jacksonville interior designer Judith Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design and ASID allied member, is featured in “Spectacular Homes of Florida,” an exclusive coffee table book which showcases 50 of Florida’s finest designers.
The 216-page, full-color hardbound book contains professional photography of several stunning homes as well as dialogue with Sisler Johnston about the design elements, artistry and behind the scenes inspiration that goes into each captivating design.
“It was an honor to be invited to be part of a select group of professionals who are committed to excellence in the design world,” Sisler Johnston said. “The photography features several of our latest model show homes and private residences.”
The Brylen Homes model at Port St. John is among the show homes presented in “Spectacular Homes of Florida.” The living room exudes the warmth and charm of a formal space yet communicates a relaxed elegance that is both pleasing to the eye and inviting to the senses.
“I enjoy working with textural details and fabric layering,” Sisler Johnston said. “I designed a subtle architectural millwork
enhancement to frame the sofa wall and complement the opposing fireplace surround. The addition of a textured wall covering provided another layer. I used nubby, woven fabrics and then softened the look with silky monochromatic drapery panels in gold with bronze fabric accents.”
The coffee table is an example of exotic wood as art with its leather, carved and studded enhancements. The studded trim is repeated in one of the dual fabric lounge chairs with patterned cushions and solid fabric framing.
Another builder show home designed by Sisler Johnston and featured in the book is the Panitz Signature Homes model at Palencia. The family room carries a sophisticated island ambiance with its sisal area rugs, brown mahogany and iron furnishings and leather and woven rush cord seating. The fireplace wall offers an interesting presentation of coral stone, millwork storage and display areas, and architecturally inspired drywall detailing. The outdoor living space shows a hand-rubbed black iron and wicker seating group with outdoor lighting and accessories elegant enough to be considered part of the indoor space. The dining room highlights an estate size table, Tuscan lighting and beautiful permanent botanicals. It shows a masculine study entrance, which features a custom-designed iron transom over the double door entry.
The Charleston model at Tidewater and the Nottingham model at St. Johns Forest by ICI Homes are also pictured. Both of these homes have family rooms with unique two-story fireplaces. The Charleston details the comforts of a lodge with its stacked stone fireplace and coffered ceiling painted in antique pine. The Nottingham showcases a two-story double mantle fireplace wall surrounded by triple-stacked windows that are softened by draping panels and valances. Tropical touches abound in the furnishings and fabric choices, making this a comfortable and relaxed family gathering place.
“Spectacular Homes of Florida” provided Sisler Johnston with the opportunity to showcase some of the company’s residential custom home designs. Many people associate the firm with designing show homes and amenity centers without recognizing that they have a residential division dedicated to working closely with each client to design the home they have always aspired to have.
As an example of her residential work, Sisler Johnston chose to feature a Mediterranean oceanfront residence with terra cotta flooring. The dining room has a beautiful 102’ glass-top, stone-base table. Stately studded guest chairs in ochre-textured chenille are paired with patterned woven and solid carved wood host chairs. Elaborate silk window dressings cascade from carved wood and metallic rods with finials and ornamental brackets. The home’s majestic spiral staircase has cobalt Italian-glazed tile risers. Sisler Johnston chose cobalt fine china and crystal table setting. A custom designed table sash has large tassel fringe and coordinates with the host chairs. The custom home’s gathering room has two conversation areas separated from one another by an arched opening. One faces the natural coral fireplace, while the other faces an
entertainment armoire and baby grand piano. Both look toward an oceanfront expanse of bay windows which are framed with sage textured draperies and arched high contrast valances that reinforce the natural curved arches and columns of the room’s architecture.
