JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The work of Jacksonville interior
design firm Sisler Johnston Interior Design is featured in Residential
Design for Aging in Place, an interior design reference
book about designing living spaces that allow residents to
age in place gracefully. Endorsed by the American Society
of Interior Designers (ASID), the book is written by design
professionals for design professionals and called a key reference
on the topic of residential design for aging in place.
“As
the first wave of Baby Boomers approaches retirement, the demand for beautiful
and thoughtful interior design that accommodates aging in place has grown dramatically,” said
Judith Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design and ASID
allied member. “Homeowners are interested in being able to stay
in their homes as they mature and this book shows how to design homes or retrofit
existing homes to allow for adaptation over time.”
Residential Design for Aging in Place showcases the design concepts
and principles that allow people to remain in their homes as they grow older
and their needs and abilities change. Several of Sisler Johnston’s
designs featured throughout the book showcase Fleet Landing, a Life Care Community
in Atlantic Beach, Fla. Along with presenting beautiful gathering spaces,
home theater settings, bedrooms and dining areas, these photographs illustrate
how successful aging-in-place environments combine aesthetic appeal with functional
design to meet the safety needs and challenges of physical limitations.

The newly published 236-page hardbound reference book authored
by designers Drue Lawlor and Michael A. Thomas includes in-depth
case studies to demonstrate how these principles and recommendations
create design solutions for maturing adults. Both
authors are ASID Fellows and their recommendations are based
on many years of firsthand experience designing residences
for aging in place. Residential
Design for Aging in Place is available for sale at www.amazon.com.
“If
you seek to understand how to create effective spaces for
the elderly, this reference book is the definitive guide,” Sisler Johnston
said. “We are
going to see many changes in the way future generations choose
to live. Today’s
seniors want to be surrounded by a beautiful environment
that supports their independence.”
