ATLANTIC BEACH, Florida – Sisler Johnston Interior Design
has completed the furnishings design of Windward Commons, the
new state-of-the-art community center at Fleet Landing retirement
community in Atlantic Beach.
“Our
company specializes in designing interiors for senior living communities,” said
Judith Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design and ASID
Allied Member. “These interior environments are designed to contribute
to the wellness and self-esteem of all who enjoy them.”
Sisler Johnston
Interior Design worked with Noelker & Hull Associates, RPC Contractors, and
the Fleet Landing management team to develop colorful coastal-style surroundings
consistent with the community’s world-class reputation.
The 25,000-square-foot
community center offers lifestyle amenities such as an age-friendly fitness center,
heated indoor pool, spa and salon service center, art studio and technology center. Windward
Commons also includes a gathering room with fireplace and symphonic player piano,
400-seat auditorium equipped with high-tech electronics and indoor, heated Olympic-sized
pool and whirlpool.

Porcelain
stone floors in a golden travertine pattern were selected
for the reception area and the auditorium’s breakout gallery. Custom draperies, decorative
valences and cornice enhancements decorate windows throughout the community center. A
colorful patterned medallion carpet in paprika, evergreen, cobalt blue, cocoa,
and honey toned beige is the focal point for the gathering room.
The upholstery
selected for sofa, chairs and accents is from a design collection of Crypton
commercial textiles, tapestries and suede cloths that rival the finest residential
fabrics. The gathering room seating group is clustered around a glowing
fireplace. The lamp and console tables feature turned walnut with antique
bronze iron details. French arm chairs surround the
player piano.
“We
chose the latest, most innovative residential-styled weaves and patterns to adorn
each space while paying particular attention to providing fire-rated commercially
durable materials,” Sisler Johnston said.

In the auditorium,
Sisler Johnston selected elegant, residential-style stacking
arm chairs with front casters that allow for ease in access. The chair’s fluted metal
frames are finished with a faux walnut stain to combine metal’s durability
and flexibility with a rich wood appearance. Diamond-patterned evergreen upholstery
covers the shield back arm
chairs.
The 72-inch round tables fold and have carts for storage. The
auditorium has a folding wall making it possible to divide
the space into two multi-purpose spaces. The artwork
features a musical theme with an array of instruments and
players.
The indoor
café is used for informal dining for residents and staff, and flows outdoors
to umbrella shaded tables. Sisler Johnston chose aluminum chairs molded
into a rattan style. They are powder-coated in a soft pewter finish. Upholstered
cushions highlight sage, taupe and umber stripes.
The break-out
gallery runs the length of the auditorium and has high ceilings
and arches with dramatic architectural lighting. Sisler Johnston selected classic contemporary
regency-styled guest chairs and tables in walnut with a starburst inlay top. Permanent
botanicals include trees, floor plants and table top accessories. The break-out
gallery has built-in display cases. One houses a resident-built replica of the
military sailing ship, The Constitution. The other displays artistic accessories
and activity-themed sculptures. Original glicee and limited-edition framed
art complement the center’s sunny coastal Mediterranean
style.
